During my recent visit to Istanbul, I was struck by the city's rich history and vibrant culture, which is reflected in every corner of the city.

My time in Istanbul was mostly spent wandering through its ancient streets and admiring the stunning architecture of its mosques and I was constantly amazed by the beauty and grandeur of these incredible landmarks. But what really caught my attention were the friendly cats that roam the streets of Istanbul, seemingly unbothered by the hustle and bustle of city life.

Overall, my time in Istanbul was a truly remarkable experience, and I can't wait to return and continue exploring all that this amazing city has to offer. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or just someone looking for a one-of-a-kind adventure, Istanbul is the perfect destination.

Food and drink

Istanbul is famous for its vibrant street food scene, offering a unique and delicious culinary experience for food lovers. One of the city's most popular snacks is the mouth-watering stuffed olives, filled with a variety of delicious ingredients such as almonds, garlic, and cheese. Another must-try dish in Istanbul is the iconic "döner kebab". Mado is a well-known ice cream parlour in Istanbul, famous for its unique and authentic flavours. What sets Mado's ice cream apart is its stretchy texture, which is achieved through the use of salep, a flour made from the root of wild orchids. This ingredient, combined with other traditional Turkish ingredients such as pistachios, creates a creamy and delicious ice cream unlike any other.

Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern, located in the heart of Istanbul, is a breathtaking underground water storage structure that dates back to ancient times. This incredible piece of engineering is a remarkable example of Byzantine architecture and is a true marvel to behold. As you descend the steps into the dimly lit cistern, you'll be transported to a mystical world that is unlike anything else you've ever experienced.

The cistern, which was constructed in the 6th century, is supported by a forest of 336 marble columns, each standing 30 feet tall. These columns are believed to have been salvaged from earlier Roman buildings, and they provide an awe-inspiring backdrop for the vast expanse of water that covers the floor of the cistern. As you explore the cistern, you'll discover that its walls are adorned with beautiful carvings and intricate patterns, each telling a unique story about Istanbul's rich cultural heritage.

Istanbul is home to some of the most magnificent and breathtaking mosques in the world. The city is famous for its grandeur and diversity of Islamic architecture that dates back to the Ottoman Empire. The mosques in Istanbul are not just places of worship but also cultural landmarks that reflect the rich history and heritage of the city. The domes, minarets, and intricate designs of the mosques are simply stunning and awe-inspiring. Some of the most notable mosques in Istanbul include the Hagia Sophia, Sultan Ahmed Mosque, Suleymaniye Mosque, and many others.

During our trip to Istanbul, we were disappointed to find out that the Blue Mosque, one of the most famous mosques in the city, was closed due to renovations. However, that did not stop us from exploring the other magnificent mosques in the city. We were amazed by the beauty and grandeur of the mosques we visited, from the stunning Hagia Sophia with its iconic dome, to the intricate tilework and impressive courtyard of the Suleymaniye Mosque. Each mosque had its own unique charm and beauty that left us in awe. The architecture and design of these mosques truly reflect the rich cultural heritage and history of Istanbul, making them must-visit destinations for anyone traveling to the city.
